THE 2014 US NATIONALS, AUGUST 9-10

Port Ludlow Washington was the venue for the 2014 US Nationals. The natural features of the bay, such as it’s North exposure to the Summer northerlies making their way down from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, combined with an afternoon thermal provide for very raceable wind conditions when other Puget Sound locations are typically glassed out this time of year.

With the wind blowing between 8 and 12 knots the fleet reeled off 6 races in incredibly various conditions. Heads had to be out of the bilges to not get hammered by the tricky and very local counter clockwise tide rivers and moving heat bubbles (holes) that could envelop and dissipate then to be replaced by a fresh puff moving down the opposite side of the bay. Actually, these conditions are perfect for somewhat mitigating the speed differences that might exist due to the 60 year age differential that exists between some of the boats.

Consequently, the score reflects the variable conditions with 4 of the six boats winning individual races and second through fifth were only 3 points apart in the final tally. Ultimately USA 107 Frenzy, skippered by Rodger Phillips, had the best handle on things winning the regatta and modern division. After a long rehab US 87 Maybe VII returned in brilliant white livery, skippered by Kris Bundy of Team Kimo et. al. and took the classic division after a tie breaker involvingĀ  Saga, the other Team Kimo entry.

Thanks need to be extended to the race committee, Dan and Pat Taylor, The Port Madison Yacht club for the committee boat and race gear, Pat Mitchell for the starting line boat, and Geoff and Betsy Pentz our hosts for the Saturday night dinner.
