Boat Name: Oslo II
Sail: N 22
Year Built: 1926
Designer: Johan Anker
Builder: Anker & Jensen
Owner: Giese Family
History: Owned for many years by the Giese family. Hans Otto Giese was a prominent 6 meter sailor and tireless promoter of the class for many years. Oslo was the first six meter to come to the Pacific Northwest and was well known in the winner's circle in the 30's, 40's and 50's. Oslo was a familiar and formidable opponent on Lake Washington in the 60's and Mr. Giese's so-called "Cold War" tactics could never be discounted. She is still in racing trim and immaculately maintained with her original wood spars and old fashioned small jib. Oslo spends most of her time in the San Juan Islands, about 60 northof Seattle, occasionally competing in local races like the Shaw Island Classic.
November 6, 2025 - Oslo II is For Sale
Sailors, Oslo II was built in 1926 and needs a new home. She arrived in Seattle in 1937, after my parents saw her forlorn shape in Oslo Harbor, while on their honeymoon. Oslo II was designed and built by Anker and Jensen for Norway's Crown Prince Olav, who raced her for a time, winning her first Regatta, the Cowes Regatta. She has cruised throughout Puget Sound and into B.C., with our family aboard, and won many races in those waters over decades, including the Sir Thomas Lipton Cup, four times. Oslo was one of the first 6's in Seattle and is now the oldest. ln the 1960's the Seattle 6 Meter fleet was a world renown fleet of Champions. The Giese family has maintained her through the years, with the help of a local boatbuilder, Anchor Jensen. Oslo has had extensive repairs through the years, in 1996 in Port Townsend and 2A12 at the Jesperson Boatyard. The iron floors were replaced with bronze, several planks were replaced, with bronze fasteners, the rudder pintles were replaced with bronze, the rudder shaft was turned into stainless, and oak frames were added. Repair records are available. The deck was replaced and fiberglassed. The mast is original and in beautiful shape, as is the tiller. The mast was dry stored every winter for several decades and always varnished annually. The boom was replaced in 1972. The sails are well used; main, genoa, drifter, storm jib, spinnaker. Oslo II still sails like a dream. ln hot summer the planks shrink and there is some leakage whilst heeling. An honorable home is what she needs most, a satisfactory price is of secondary importance.
